Battle of the South Classic Begins Travel Team Season
Friday thru Sunday over 90 teams will be in Jackson to compete in the 2008 Battle of the South Classic. Play will be held in 7 age groups, 17&under all the way down to 11&under. Pool play begins Friday night with championship bracket play scheduled to begin on Saturday evening. Many of Mississippi's top Travel Teams will be participating this weekend as well as teams from Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Texas and California.
Many of the players in our Magnoliapreps player rankings will be playing in this event. In all, 19 out of 30 players ranked in our class of 2009 rankings, 12 out of 15 players ranked in our class of 2010 rankings and 4 out of 10 players ranked in our class of 2011 rankings are slated to play this weekend.
Play kicks off on Friday at 6:00 with a 17&under clash between two of the Magnolia State's top teams, the Jackson Tigers and the Magnolia Stars. The Tigers line-up will feature Forest Hill PG Andre Stringer, Provine F Jalen Courtney, Oxford F Dan Hicks, Port Gibson C Jamarious Sykes and Starkville F Rashard Perkins. The Magnolia Stars are expected to counter with a line-up featuring Lanier PG Marcellus Hansberry, Columbia F Nick Magee, Taylorsville G Billy Hamilton and Raymond F Corey Sanders.
Also competing in the 17&under bracket this weekend will be the Jackson Panthers with a line-up featuring Provine PG Carl Blair and PF Emery Kelly, Biloxi PG Isaiah Canaan, Port Gibson WG Kadeem Fleming, Meridian F Kenny Brown and Genesis One WG Nicos Norris; MBA Hoops with a line-up featuring Callaway F LaQuinton Ross, G Marquavius (Deville) Smith and PG Julysses Nobles, Yazoo City F Jontavious Sulton, Oxford F Keith Sercy and Meridian WG Rodney Hood and the Birmingham (AL) Storm featuring top 5 nationally rated C DeMarcus Cousins, Noxubee County WG Shaunssey Smith, Madison Central WG Jeremy Adams, and Rosa Fort PG Montrevious Sanders.
