Erwin overcame first-half foul trouble and 19 turnovers to come away with a 71-62 win over Leeds Tuesday night at Jerry N. Oxford Gymnasium on the campus of Leeds High School.
DeMarcus Cousins scored a game-high 24 points as the Class 5A Eagles (3-2) penetrated the paint at will and slammed home six dunks on the night.
Shawn Reed had 14 points and Brian Smith added 13 for Erwin.
Class 3A Leeds (1-5) pulled within 63-60 with 1:13 remaining in the game after a 3-pointer by Ladarius Frazier, his third of the game, but Erwin turned up its defensive pressure.
Reed made a steal and layup, followed immediately by an Antwun Nunn steal, who passed to Reed, who then lobbed it to Smith for a lay-in for a 68-60 lead.
After an Erwin technical free throw, Leeds grabbed a defensive rebound, but Smith striped Frazier and soared for a dunk to seal the game.
"We didn't panic and finished the game," Erwin coach Gregory Moore said. "We didn't get rattled or frazzled."
Leeds was led by David Murray, who scored 17 points. Frazier added 15. |
