Top 15-ranked 2008 prospect Willie Warren highlights day blowing up for 45 points
Willie Warren, No. 11 in the Class of 2008, went for 45 points versus a solid Howard Pulley club scoring 23 in the first half and 22 more in the second half to lead his Team Texas squad to the victory. He had 7-threes to cap off a huge outing.
Also last night, we had some real big-time recruiting news as both 6-foot-9 Al Farouq Aminu and 7-foot Tony Woods from the Georgia Stars committed to Wake Forest. The other rumor floating around North Augusta is that Meanstreets teammates 6-foot-9 Michael Dunigan and 6-foot-6 Matt Humphrey are close to committing as a duo to Oregon. No one has confirmed it, but then again no one is denying it either. So we'll be watching that situation over the next week or so.
In this morning's action Warren followed up last night's big numbers with 24 points as he led Team Texas to a 67-62 win over Houston Hoops, breaking a 62-all tie with a deep three with just over twenty seconds to play.
6-foot Rotnei Clarke added 16 points and 6-foot-3 Chris Babb chipped in with 15 points for Team Texas. Houston Hoops' top gun was 6-foot-4 Jeremy Green (Stanford) with 16 points while Tommy Mason-Griffin (LSU) added 15 points in the hard fought loss.
Once again the New York Gauchos were part of a thriller as they edged the Alabama Challenge, 66-65. UConn commit Kemba Walker led the way scoring 15 points including key free throws down the stretch to help seal the win. The Challenge was led by 6-foot-7 Noel Johnson, who finished with a game high 21 points.
Team Stat survived a 73-69 overtime battle with the King James Shooting Stars to keep their hopes alive in pool play for a championship tourney birth. Team Stat was led by 6-foot-8 bookend forward Kevin Foster and Mike Davis, who finished with 18 points each. 6-foot-5 Justin Edwards added 15 points in the win. King James was led by 6-foot-5 Robert Wilson, who took game-high honors with 22 points.
We split our day between the 17 & 16-Under squads, so we got to see some of the top young talent in North Augusta today. Here's a quick look at who performed well this morning at the Nike Peach Jam:
Greg Monroe 6-foot-11 C (Louisiana Select) Gretna, LA Helen Cox was on his game while we watched last night despite being double and sometimes triple-teamed by the Warriors. Our No. 1 in 2008 knocked down the elbow jumper, but was at his best swooping to the hoop and thundering dunks off the dribble.
DeMarcus Cousins 6-foot-10 (2009) C (Birmingham Storm) Birmingham, AL Erwin was controlling the paint for the Storm. The Top Five 2009 prospect crashed the glass keeping the ball alive and did a nice job blocking or altering shots. He scored with the jump hook and slam while we watched.
Jeremy Tyler 6-foot-10 (2010) C (California Supreme) San Diego, CA Hoover was solid this afternoon he knocking down elbow jumpers and finishing a couple alley-oop plays with slams. Top-five 2010 prospect has all the tools to become a dominant force down the road if he doesn't let his temper or frustration get in the way. He has the tools to move to the 4-spot too!
Kemba Walker 6-foot-1 PG (New York Gauchos) New York, NY Rice was stellar again this morning breaking down "D" off the dribble and distributing the rock. He has been on top of his game as a floor leader much to the delight of Connecticut head coach Jim Calhoun who has been at all of his games.
Xavier Gibson 6-foot-11 C (Georgia Blazers) Dothan, AL Northview was really aggressive on the offensive end while we watched. He dunked off the drop step and swished a sweet little jump hook in the paint. He's starting to recover from his bad wrist and was playing with confidence once again.
Alex Oriakhi 6-foot-8 (2009) PF (BABC) Tilton, NH Tilton School was a force in the afternoon game we watched. He blocked shots & cleaned the glass with regularity. He has really filled out body-wise and is asserting himself in the paint.
Jereme Richmond 6-foot-7 (2010) WF (Rising Stars-JG) had a number of Big Ten coaches shaking their heads; knowing that the young Illinois commit would be someone they had to face in the future. He knocked down the 17-footer and thundered drive with regularity in the short time we watched this afternoon.
Kevin Foster 6-foot-8 CF (Houston Hoops) Katy, TX Morton Ranch was on fire today knocking down 16-footer on the elbow and finishing dribble drive with explosive flush. He finished with 18 points and should have picked up a number of offers based on his play in North Augusta.
Royce White 6-foot-7 (2009) CF (Howard Pulley) Minneapolis, MN DeLasalle showed his versatility knocking down 17-footer off the dribble and attacking hoop to finish in traffic. He had a lot of schools taking notice including Minnesota, Iowa, Marquette, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Kansas who were in the stands at his game.
Luke Fabrizius 6-foot-8 WF (Illinois Warriors) Arlington, IL Hershey was more than holding his own versus Louisiana Select. He can knock down three and showed a toughness we hadn't seen before attacking hoop off the dribble. He has a lot of interest, but is waiting to see who steps up and offers this month.
Robert Wilson 6-foot-4 SG (King James Shooting Stars) Garfield Heights, OH was on fire scoring 22 points in the tough loss to Team Stat. He knocked down 4-threes and finished at rim with flush. He handles the rock pretty well and can create his own opportunities.
Derrick Nix 6-foot-9 (2009) PF (The Family) was a real surprise this afternoon as the lanky big man blocked shots and finished around the hoop with one step dunks. He has the quicks to move to facing the hoop in the future, so look for his name to show up on some schools hot list soon.
Dominique Ferguson 6-foot-7 (2010) WF (SYF Players) was one of the biggest surprises we observed today. He has wing skills, knocked down jumpers from 17-feet and got to the hoop with dribble drives to finish in traffic. One on the rise in sophomore class.
John Jenkins 6-foot-4 (2009) SG (YOMCA Memphis) Henderson, TN Station Camp was on fire from the perimeter scoring over twenty in the afternoon session while knocking down 4-threes while we watched. He had lots of SEC interest with Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida among the schools in the gym while he played.
