Cousins goes for 30pts/21 rbs in Orlando
At the Wide World of Sports complex on the grounds of Disney World, in the 16 and under boys Super Showcase, DeMarcus Cousins dropped in 30 points, grabbed 21 rebounds and fed his teammates with passes that were converted successfully 10 times. There could have been more. DeMarcus Cousins was that good.
LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLORIDA -- Every so often you have an opportunity to watch a special performance during the month of July by a big man who is likely to make a name for himself on the highest level. Today, the New York City Gauchos were the opponent for 6-11 big man DeMarcus Cousins but in many ways they were much like the coaches and fans in the stands -- admiring his individual game.
At the Wide World of Sports complex on the grounds of Disney World, in the 16 and under boys Super Showcase, DeMarcus Cousins dropped in 30 points, grabbed 21 rebounds and fed his teammates with passes that were converted successfully 10 times. There could have been more. DeMarcus Cousins was that good.
While scouts try to figure out where DeMarcus Cousins could eventually play on the college basketball level, one must also believe if he works hard that he will get a great shot of playing many minutes on a professional level. He has tremendous skills and the Gauchos felt the brunt of all of them today.
Inside the Milk House, the fans that were lucky enough to watch the performance shook their heads every time DeMarcus Cousins either made a dazzling pass or thumped home a follow. His agility around the basket makes him a threat in every offensive situation. It's why a school like Kentucky is working hard to recruit him, despite DeMarcus Cousins being a member of the 2009 class.
"I have some time to make a decision," he said after today's game. "I don't want to rush a decision. But it's nice to have so many schools interested in me."
It's not hard to figure out why a school like Kentucky and others love his individual game. He moves his feet adroitly and can flip a behind the back pass while leading a fast break. Yes, at times, DeMarcus Cousins will give the ball up. But he is skilled enough to warrant him to have some freedom on the offensive side of the ball.
DeMarcus Cousins named his top four in no particular order -- "It's Kentucky, North Carolina, UAB, and Memphis," he stated. He also listed Florida, Alabama, and Texas as schools of interest too. "I like all the schools because they have a chance to win and have great coaches," he said.
DeMarcus also said his trip to Kentucky was reason to have them high on his list. "I was at their elite camp," he said. "It was a great experience. I liked the campus a lot. I thought the facilities were beautiful too."
DeMarcus Cousins admits it's going to be tough to make a decision eventually. "Theey are all great schools," he said. "I just want to learn more about them before I decide. I have some time."
For now, DeMarcus Cousins will spend his time here inside the Milk House dazzling more coaches, scouts, and fans. He says he does enjoy putting the ball on the floor and finding an open teammate for a basket. "It's just as good as scoring yourself," he said.
