Hoop dreams coming true for teenage athlete
One young local athlete has set his goals at the highest level with dreams of becoming a professional basketball player in the NBA.
Rosa Fort junior point guard Martrevious Sanders, son of Andrea Norwood and Roger Harris, and great-grandson of Calvin Norwood of Tunica, has been taking his ?game? to the next level over the past several months in participating in two separate NBA basketball camps over the summer. One was held in Memphis and the other at the home of the University of Kentucky Wildcats. He also participated in the national Amateur Athletic Union boy?s basketball league.
Sanders stated that after meeting one of AAU?s star players, DeMarcus Cousins of the Birmingham Storm team at NBA camp in Memphis, he had the opportunity to meet with scouts from around the country and was asked to join the team and play over the summer. The young athlete had the opportunity to travel to Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, and South Carolina to participate in events.
?We learned a lot about the game and we worked on moves and shooting and things like that,? said Sanders.
Playing for the Birmingham Storm afforded Sanders a huge opportunity to meet and play with top athletes from around the country.
?This was a really great experience for me, it was fun! I got to travel all over the place and play with some great players and I learned a lot too,? Sanders said.
Sanders praised Coach Marcus Richardson of Rosa Fort for helping him live his dreams and push him to excel.
Sanders was privileged to be on the team that took the Championship at the 13th Annual Houston Kingwood Classic tournament held in Houston Texas earlier this summer, scoring 11 points in the Championship win.
Sanders looks forward to returning to the courts at Rosa Fort this season to join his team and vie for the State Championship.
?I think we can win state this year. Our whole team came back,? Sanders said.
He also remains hopeful that scouts will see his progress and offer him a chance to play at the next level toward his goal of becoming an NBA player.
?I hope to sign with a school and I know some are looking at me, but I am just going to keep going to school and keep playing,? Sanders said
