Watford transfers to Shades Valley
Highly touted prospect Christian Watford has transferred to Shades Valley High School and should be able to play basketball for the Mounties this season.
Watford, considered a top-ranked national prospect in the class of 2009 by numerous scouting services, enrolled at Shades Valley on Monday, said Watford's father, Ernest.
Watford has yet to practice with the team, Mounties coach Mike Burrus said, and will not until it is confirmed that the Watford family made a bona fide move.
Ernest Watford said the family has made a bona fide move and he is just waiting for all the paperwork to go through before his son can play basketball this season.
Watford originally transferred to Clay-Chalkville High at the beginning of the school year, but was ruled ineligible for one year when an AHSAA investigation determined that violations were made in the transfer. Top prospect and former Erwin forward DeMarcus Cousins and former Ramsay point guard Josh Pritchett were also ruled ineligible and Clay-Chalkville was fined for the violations.
The AHSAA declined to specify what the violations were, but the elder Watford maintained Tuesday that he and his son did nothing wrong.
"We're doing nothing different here than what we did at Clay-Chalkville," Ernest Watford said.
Watford, a 6-7 junior small forward, played at Hewitt-Trussville last season. He is ranked the No. 48 overall prospect by Rivals.com and the No.6 small forward in the country by ESPN.com.
"He's excited to play," said Ernest Watford. "That's all he ever wanted to do."
DeMarcus Cousins recently enrolled at LeFlore High School in Mobile and played in the team's season opener Tuesday night.
