Top-ranked teams feature matchup in today's Classic
With Blount moving up to No. 2 in the Alabama Sports Writers Association's new Class 6A high school basketball poll, today's marquee matchup in the Martin Luther King Day Classic is now a 1 vs. 2 showdown.
Top-ranked LeFlore (21-1), which is also ranked No. 1 in hoopsusa.com's national poll for traditional high schools, takes on the Leopards (18-2) at 8 p.m., topping an afternoon of four high school games at the Mitchell Center.
Tickets for the game are expected to be $15 at the door for the entire day's action. Preceding the LeFlore-Blount matchup will be games featuring Baker and Alma Bryant at 3 p.m., Vigor and Murphy at 4:45 p.m., and No. 1 5A Williamson and B.C. Rain at 6:15 p.m.
LeFlore is led by 6-foot-6 Marquette signee Nick Williams, who is averaging 21 points per game, and 6-10 DeMarcus Cousins, one of the top prospects in the Class of 2009. Blount counters with the cat-quick backcourt tandem of Jamel Brazeal (22 points per game) and Lee Riley (15 points per game) and the inside presence of 6-10 center Brenton Butler.
"We match up pretty good," said Blount coach Robert Bettis, whose team will be without forward Willie Bohannon, who is on a football recruiting visit to Tennessee.
