Defending champs continue to reign
Defending champions dominate the first Alabama Sports Writers Association basketball poll of the season, led by Class 6A teams LeFlore in the boys poll and the Sparkman girls.
Of the seven classifications, four boys and six girls defending champions stand atop the poll.
LeFlore downed Jeff Davis in last year's final and is 5-0 to start the season. The Rattlers, ranked nationally by ESPN, received a boost when former Erwin star DeMarcus Cousins, a 6-foot-10 junior ranked as one of the top post players in the nation, enrolled at the Mobile school this year.
In addition to LeFlore, defending champion Class 5A Williamson, Class 2A R.C. Hatch and AISA Glenwood were also named No. 1.
Girls defending champions named No. 1 are Class 6A Sparkman, four-time Class 5A champion Ramsay, Class 4A Midfield, Class 3A Sheffield, Class 1A McIntosh and AISA's Glenwood.
